About

The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Christian life. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion play a vital role in our parish by ensuring that the Faithful can receive the Blessed Sacrament with reverence and efficiency, both within the church and beyond its walls.

What is an “Extraordinary” Minister?

Ordained ministers (Bishops, Priests, and Deacons) are the ‘ordinary’ ministers – the term “extraordinary” distinguishes lay ministers from “ordinary” ministers. Laypeople are commissioned by the Pastor to assist in specific circumstances:

  • At the Altar: Assisting with the distribution of Holy Communion during Masses when there is a large assembly and a limited number of clergy present.
  • To the Homebound: Carrying the Real Presence of Christ to parishioners who are unable to attend Mass due to illness, age, or infirmity, ensuring they remain connected to the parish family.  You may bring Holy Communion to people at their home or in convalescent homes.

All Mass ministry volunteers use the Ministry Scheduler which allows you to identify the Mass(es) at which you would like to serve, dates/times when you are not available to serve at Mass, as well as submit requests for a substitute when you are unable to serve for a Mass for which you are scheduled.  Eucharistic Ministers who visit the homebound will set their own schedule with those they visit, and may be weekly or less often.

A Sacred Calling

This ministry is a beautiful opportunity to serve your brothers and sisters in Christ. It requires a deep love for the Eucharist and a desire to serve the community with humility and grace. All ministers receive specific training and commissioning to prepare them for this sacred duty.

How to Join This Ministry

You must be at least 18 years of age, and both men and women are welcome.  You must be able to carry the liturgical vessels – ciborium or chalice – with reverence and dignity and observe a reverent and prayerful attitude while being comfortable handling the sacred species.  This ministry is greatly enhanced by the minister’s concern and care for the poor, the hungry, and the needy.

If you feel the Lord calling you to assist the parish in this profound way, we invite you to take the next step and talk with our Pastor after Mass for more information.
